The Lady Khama Run 21 trail run is slated for April 15 at the University of Botswana stadium.

The charitable marathon has been divided into three sets of 5km, 10km and 21km. It will be run on and off road starting from the University of Botswana.

Speaking during a press briefing on Wednesday, the Lady Khama Charitable Trust chairperson Dale Ter Haar said since its inception in 2002, the trust had been able to assist over 40 organisations for the vulnerable and disadvantaged and disbursed over P15m.

“Our focus very much remains on vulnerable women and children and people living with disabilities,” he said.

He further stated that in the last financial year, 2016/2017, the trust dispersed about P3m after raising over P5m.

The P3m was shared upon by ‘Ithute Go Tshameka’, the concept the trust came up with for early childhood development and play groups, completion of a double story building for the Botswana retired Nurses society for their daycare centre for vulnerable and orphaned children and the Botswana Red Cross society Tlamelong Rehabilitation Centre where they supplied a borehole and refurbished the Centre.

He said this year the race had invested in improvements in terms of technical support, race timing, online registration and route selection.

“Half of it is going to be off road, making it tougher and quite interesting. What is even more special about it is that you have to run through the Gaborone game reserve and you got to see game,” he said.

When handing over a P100 000 sponsorship cheque to the race, Bomaid sales and marketing manager Beulah Mapitse said they took pride in supporting organisations that gave back to disadvantaged members of the society.

Spar Botswana also came on board with P80 000 sponsorship.

The trust is also involved in other charitable deeds like the Lady Khama Family Fun Day and the Diamond Derby horse race.
