The Lady Khama Charitable Trust was founded in 2002 by the current Patron of the Trust and eldest son of Sir Seretse Khama and Lady Ruth Khama, His Excellency Lieutenant General Dr Seretse Khama Ian Khama. With the aim to continue the community work that Lady Ruth Khama had spent so much of her time pursuing.
Lady Khama Charitable Trust raises funds for existing Botswana based charities that focus on improving the lives of vulnerable women, children, and people living with disabilities. Often these organisations are situated in remote communities that otherwise struggle to procure support. Our strength is in local fund raising, identifying the beneficiaries most in need of our help, and then providing this support.
To date we’ve provided support of over P19 million ($1.7 Million USD) to our beneficiaries.

Affectionally known as Lady K. was always concerned about the needs of women and children, in Botswana, especially those who were disadvantaged.
In London 1947, Ruth met Seretse Khama, heir to the chieftainship of the Bamangwato, the biggest tribal nation in Bechuanaland. Seretse and Ruth married on the 29th September 1948; Seretse was later banished from Bechuanaland by the British Government, primarily, for his interracial marriage. After a long and determined campaign the couple was able to return to Bechuanaland in 1956.
Later, as First Lady, Lady Khama supported Sir Seretse Khama in his role as Head of State and set about building and running a new nation. Her innate concern for others manifested itself in her leadership of numerous charities including the Botswana Red Cross Society, the Botswana Council of Women, and the SOS Children’s Villages.
